BRASILEA NEWS #04 – DEPARTURE TO NEW SHORES

Departure to new shores
Daniel Faust headed Brasilea for 15 years, initially as managing director and since 2012 as director. At the end of September 2020, he will leave the foundation at his own request to go new ways.

71 art exhibitions and more than 150 cultural events are what Daniel Faust has initiated and implemented for Brasilea over the past 15 years. «This time was very exciting and enriching. Together with my team, I was able to bring a colorful range of Brazilian artists and cultural events to the premises at Westquai 39. This is an important contribution to the cultural exchange between Switzerland and Brazil, ”says the outgoing director happily.

Former ship engine workshop for art and culture
Before Daniel Faust was awarded the head of the foundation in October 2005, he was responsible for the design (as an originally studied architect) and was in charge of the renovation work of the former ship engine workshop for one and a half years. This resulted in today’s exhibition and collection building with the striking green facade, into which South American life gradually entered. “Step by step, we have built a comprehensive program dedicated to contemporary Brazilian art and culture,” says Daniel Faust. “But one thing is clear: none of this would have been possible without the support of my team. I would like to take this opportunity to thank them for their tireless commitment and support”, he says, “And of course our thanks also go out in particular to the many visitors, including international ones, for whom we ultimately created our program. Your arrival was our driving force.”

Many thanks to the foster father of the foundation
After 15 years, Daniel Faust is leaving, grateful and proud of what has been achieved. From the Rhine port in the border triangle into the world: How far his commitment extends is shown, among other things, by his awarding the most important cultural award in Brazil. In 2017 he received the “Prêmio Itamaraty de Diplomacia Cultural” from the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. For the first time ever, this award went to Switzerland.

But it is not just events like this that show the importance of Daniel Faust’s work. “Without the foster father of our foundation we would never have come this far,” says Prof. Dr. Thomas Bürgi, President of the Board of Trustees, sure. «Daniel, it was your passion, your connection to Brazil, your creativity and your ideas for development that has spurred us on over the years. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your commitment and wish you all the best for your future. ”

At the moment he doesn’t know exactly where the long-time Brasilea director will end up. «I would like to give myself a little more time to make this decision. Because it should be a consciously chosen path that spurs me on and keeps me happy for a long time to come. First of all, I have to loosen the deep connection a little. Those were very intense years. Time with my family is a top priority, ”says Daniel Faust.
